Gaganyaan Mission: Radio Systems to Undergo Testing at ESA’s German Lab
By Om Patil · On July 24, 2025
The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that critical radio equipment for Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight mission, will soon undergo rigorous testing at its Ground Segment Reference Facility (GSRF) in Germany. This marks a significant step forward in ensuring the success of the mission, which aims to carry three Indian astronauts into space for three days.
Key Role of ESA in Gaganyaan
India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), signed a Technical Implementing Plan (TIP) with ESA on December 4. This agreement ensures that ESA will provide critical Ground Tracking Support for Gaganyaan missions. The ESA’s facilities, including the Kourou station in French Guiana, will support ISRO in tracking and monitoring the mission.
Specific compatibility tests are being conducted to verify that Gaganyaan’s radio transmitter and receiver effectively communicate with ESA’s antennas. This is vital for seamless communication between the spacecraft and ground stations during the mission.
Testing at ESA’s German Facility
The Ground Segment Reference Facility (GSRF) in Germany is a state-of-the-art facility managed by the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC). It has been instrumental in testing equipment for major missions like Rosetta, Gaia, and Solar Orbiter. For Gaganyaan, the GSRF will conduct compatibility tests to address any potential communication challenges and ensure the mission’s success.
Gaganyaan Mission Overview
The Gaganyaan mission aims to send three astronauts to an altitude of 400 km above Earth for three days. Before the crewed flight, ISRO has planned two uncrewed missions:
- Gaganyaan-1 (G1): Testing safe re-entry and ocean landing systems. Expected launch: Early 2025.
- Gaganyaan-2 (G2): A follow-up uncrewed mission to further validate critical systems.
The ESA’s Kourou station, equipped with a 15m antenna operating in S-band and X-band wavelengths, will support the G1 mission. This collaboration highlights the growing international partnerships in space exploration.
International Collaboration
The Gaganyaan project showcases the importance of international cooperation in space exploration. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Spanish National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA) will join ESA in tracking future Gaganyaan missions. This collaborative effort underscores the global commitment to advancing human spaceflight.
As the Gaganyaan mission moves closer to launch, the partnership between ISRO and ESA highlights India’s growing prominence in the global space community. With rigorous testing and international support, Gaganyaan is set to become a milestone in human space exploration.
